For all sorts of reasons many children spend a part of their young life under the care of a local authority. For the vast majority this is the best alternative when compared with the care that can be provided at home. For some however, this may not be in their best interest, or their care may not meet the standards set by the Government. Sadly it seems that all too often there are reports in the national media of cases where children’s best interests have not been looked after while they were in care.
If you are concerned that your experience in care failed to meet your needs and this has caused you physical, behavioural or emotional harm, you may be able to claim compensation. Local authorities have their own internal complaints procedure and this is often the starting point for such claims. Independent help is available to pursue an internal complaint. However, the results may not be satisfactory. We can advise you on your prospect of successfully making a claim for compensation in these circumstances. Legal aid is available for this type of case.
