You can make claims for discrimination, unfair dismissal, wrongful dismissal, unpaid wages or a redundancy payment at an employment tribunal.
The more information you can provide to the tribunal, the more chance that the matter will be dealt with swiftly and simply. If you have a claim against your employer and can show that you have enough evidence to prove it, then the matter may be settled without needing to go to a full hearing.
If you are still in the employment, you must follow the grievance procedure first (see Handling Grievances) and only make a claim if you are not satisfied with the outcome. The time limits which apply to claims will normally be extended to allow this procedure to be followed.
You must gather as much evidence as you can. If you believe that you have been unfairly dismissed then you should keep records of every letter received and a diary note of each meeting held, who it was with and what was discussed. If you have been the victim of discrimination you should keep a diary of incidents and try to find witnesses who have seen the behaviour and are willing to make statements.
You should seek independent legal advice on your specific situation. You may have several claims arising out of one situation, for instance if you were dismissed because you made a complaint about discriminatory behaviour.
